OK, Paris isn’t 100% like it is in the movies and the guidebooks. It’s a romantic city for sure. Seriously, how many breathtaking views does this city have? Far too many to count. Add some pastries from Pierre Hermé and Angelina’s “Chocolat Africain” and the Urbane staff will immediately fall in love with you.
But, alone time at the Louvre? Forget about it. Good meals in the Latin Quarter? You know better but at least there’s top tier tango and jazz! Accordion music as your soundtrack everywhere? Street performers aren’t even allowed on the Métro anymore. Elie Goulding and techno are more likely.
Speaking of the Métro, is there seriously a better Subway system in Paris in terms of number of trains and lay-out? We’re not going to talk about the dreaded “grèves.” Who doesn’t love that they tell when “le prochain” et “le suivant” trains are arriving.
Paris isn’t just a museum despite being the premier city in the world for art museums. It’s not just a city for tourists as much as the tourists like to think it was created for them. Sorry, Haussmann created his masterpiece design for the Parisians. Napoleon built his monuments to show the world leaders…not tourists. People live here. Some of the hippest, transformative neighborhoods are here like the fascinating Jewish-Gay Quarter Mash-Up of the Marais, the up and coming Belleville and SoPi, and Canal St. Martin that is even more “Brooklyn” than Brooklyn. Of course you’ll still find life-long Parisians playing boule at Jardin du Luxembourg and bringing their baguettes home promptly at 4pm when they’re freshly baked.
And then there is the Eiffel Tower, one of the great icons of the world. You can’t stop looking.
